Borough of Manhattan Community College, The City University of New York (BMCC/CUNY) will host an art opening for the exhibit
City Lives in the
Shirley Fiterman Art Center, located on the first floor of BMCC’s Fiterman Hall, 81 Barclay Street, New York, NY 10007, on Tuesday, November 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The exhibit is being curated by noted art critic Michael Klein and will run from November 24, 2015 through January 16, 2016.
According to Klein,the exhibit explores the impact of living in an urban environment such as New York City, on artists and their work. It showcases traditional painting and sculpture, as well as conceptually based works, photography, printmaking, film, video and ceramics.
“For artists of any generation, the city is a living laboratory … colossal in scale with pedestrians everywhere and endless traffic,” says Klein, adding that artists, “become observers of day-to-day life of the city; reporting back, recording experiences or simply absorbing what they see and translating it onto canvas or into sculptural forms. There is no single reaction to the city … and the diverse range of works presented in
City Lives underscores that proposition.”
The featured artists are Alice Aycock, Michael Ashkin, Richard Bosman, Richmond Burton, Dietmar Busse, Lawrence Carroll, Sally Davies, Jane Dickson, Maureen Dougherty, Kate Ericson / Mel Ziegler, Spencer Finch, Kathy Forer, James Greco, Philippe Gronon, Cary Leibowitz, Robert Lobe, Kathryn Lynch, Rita McBride, Robert Moskowitz, James Nares, Lothar Osterburg, Michael Spano, Priscilla Stadler and Roger Welch.
The Shirley Fiterman Art Center, in partnership with the
BMCC Foundation Board (a not-for-profit organization), is dedicated to raising funds for student scholarships and ensuring the success of students who come from every borough of New York and countries around the world, seeking better lives.
Art will be available for sale at the event, with proceeds benefiting the BMCC Foundation Scholarship Fund.
